MYSTIC HEMP
Where it all began

If we were to be extremely precise we would have to say it first all began with the creation of the universe & the amazing plant we call Hemp; then millions of years later by the birth of Troy Hadeed on 24th January 1980. However we have chosen to spare you all the bla bla bla…and get to the good stuff.

Mystic Hemp was officially founded by Troy Hadeed in November 2002, however it had been conceptualized some years prior. Troy attended The University Of Tampa in Florida from 1997 – 2001 and funny enough graduated with a degree in Business Management and a minor in Spanish. During his college years the real education began in a hemp store across the road called Hyde Park Hemp owned by Steve McGribby.

Troy frequented the store and eventually started working part-time and began making hemp jewelry for the store. While getting quite creative and experimental with his jewelry making he began doing lots of research on Hemp, it’s uses, and it’s environmental benefits. Soon enough, with some inspiration from a video on Jack Herer and the hemp revolution, Troy decided that he had to make a difference; the injustices and misunderstanding brought to this incredible plant known as Cannabis Sativa was absurd. Not to mention he had a vision of industrial Hemp being cultivated not only in Trinidad but throughout the Caribbean. Although Troy knew he would be in for a fight and that the concept would not be easily accepted, he took up the challenge. He was convinced the people of Trinidad needed something new.

On returning to Trinidad after his schooling in 2001 Troy began making and selling mass amounts of hemp jewelry. Every weekend he would go out to the streets and parties hustling and selling his jewelry while of course educating the public about the possibilities of hemp. Troy slowly made a name for himself and attracted the media’s attention. After some months and continuous feedback and interest Troy decided to take it to another level, he was going to open Trinidad’s first Hemp store, “Mystic Hemp.”

Mystic Hemp was first opened (Nov 2002) in the Ceramic Trinidad compound on Wrigtson Rd. Trinidad, where Troy’s father after finally accepting his career decision and offered the use of a small outside room. Mystic Hemp was full of only hemp products and continued to get the media’s attention while continuing to educate the public about the benefits of Hemp. However, the public had not quite embraced the hemp industry as Troy had hoped. As if that was not discouraging enough, he also approached the Ministry of Agriculture in the hope of getting some interest in the potential of a local hemp industry, or at least permission to grow an experimental crop. The idea was shot down as if the Ministry’s meeting with this 21-year old ‘maniac ‘ never existed – Hemp? Grow Cannabis legally?

In the summer of 2003 Troy decided to look for a new location and after months of laboring renovations opened in his new location on Mucurapo Rd. St James, above a Jamacian restaurant called, ‘Irie Bytes.’ Although now having to pay rent and re-establish Mystic Hemp at a new location, the response was encouraging. The new location gave Mystic Hemp allot more exposure and new customers, however the majority of the public had still not come to appreciate hemp products. Against his prior feeling of not wanting to carry anything but Hemp products the market had forced Troy to do otherwise. Mystic Hemp soon began to carry Bob Marley, Che Guavera, and Indian merchandise. With the help of advertising Mystic Hemp continued to grow and the client base expanded rapidly. Even though Troy was forced to compromise, he believes it was for the best as Mystic Hemp is now in it’s 3rd year of operation and continues to expand and educate people about the incredible Hemp plant; weather they come for hemp products or not.

Presently Mystic Hemp is still located at Mucurapo Rd. St James as it continues to expand it’s customer base and product line. Currently however, Troy is on the look out for a new, bigger and better location with the hope of not only increasing his range of hemp products, but one is led to believe he has allot more than just a store in mind. Troy hopes that his new location would be permanent and in the vicinity of Arapita Ave, but has an open mind. He also assures that whenever and wherever it goes down we will all hear about it.

The Man Behind Mystic Hemp

Troy has a passion for reggae music, surfing, traveling and all things positive. He believes more in spirituality rather than religion. He doesn’t smoke and has never drunk alcohol. Troy always has a longing urge to travel and would like to one day fulfill a dream of volunteering aboard in other 3-world countries.

When asked about experiences that have changed his life he recalls a study-abroad program in his last semester at University called Semester At Sea where he traveled the world on a ship with 800 students for 4 months. This journey took him to 14 countries and gave him the traveling bug for which there is no cure.

He also recalls an experience of ‘Outward Bound Costa Rica’ where he hiked with a group of individuals from Costa Rica’s East Coast to West Coast over a period of 30 days. He says this was the most mentally and physically challenging time of his life and has prepared his for any challenge to come.

One of Troy’s new missions involve a renewable fuel know as Biodiesel which he hopes to introduce to his little paradise island of Trinidad; while of course he continues to lobby for the growth of industrial hemp.

Lastly Troy would like to thank GOD Almighty, all his friends and loved ones at home and abroard, his parents his brothers (Roger & Wayne), Gabby (his girlfriend), and all Mystic Hemp’s customers for their continued Love & Support.
